About this workshop
Maripa Oil Experience
Learn a Generations-Old Tradition
Discover how the rich, golden Maripa oil is made from fruit to bottle in this unique, hands-on workshop guided by the locals of a nearby river village.
Just a short boat ride from Danpaati River Lodge, you’ll be welcomed into a peaceful Saramaccan community where traditional knowledge is still a part of everyday life.
What is Maripa Oil?
Maripa oil comes from the fruit of the Maripa palm, which grows deep in Suriname’s forests. The oil has long been used in cooking, skin care, and traditional healing, prized for its deep, nutty scent and nourishing properties.
The process of making it is simple, but time-consuming. The fruit is harvested and boiled to soften the pulp. Then, the soft fruit is crushed and slow-cooked until the natural oil rises to the top.
Why This Experience is Special
This is more than just a workshop—it’s a rare chance to connect with local culture and learn a skill that few people outside the region ever see. You’ll get a glimpse into daily village life and help support women who keep these beautiful traditions alive.
Tips:
- Wear Comfortable Walking Shoes: The 3.2-kilometer walkways can be uneven, so make sure you’re wearing sturdy, comfortable footwear suitable for walking in natural surroundings.
