About this tour
Village Tour
Danpaati River Lodge is located in the heart of the Upper Suriname region, surrounded by many Saramaccan villages. The residents of these villages are descendants of the enslaved Africans who fled the plantations and established independent communities deep in the rainforest.
Twelve traditional villages are situated near the lodge, with the village of Dan being the closest. Most of these communities have preserved their ancient culture, religion, and customs. During your tour, you’ll see sacred offering sites used to honor ancestors or to keep away negative spirits.
The village of Grantatai lies furthest downstream, while Toemaipa is located far upstream. On a clear day, traveling by boat from the first to the last village takes about two hours.
Here are a few of the villages in the area:
-
Pikinslee – The largest village, known for its many rapids and its vibrant Rastafarian community with beautiful woodcarvings.
-
Foetoenakaba – A Christian village where the National Women’s Movement is actively involved in community work.
-
Debike – Not a village, but a medical post that provides care to the surrounding villages.
-
Botopasi – Features its own airstrip.
-
Danpaati – “Paati” means island, and Danpaati literally means “island near Dan.” This is where the lodge gets its name.
-
Maisakrikie – Known for their picturesque wooden homes and religious sites.
-
Maisokrikie & Pikinslee – Small villages full of tradition and serene river views.
Cultural Immersion
A village walk offers you the chance to get a closer look at the maroon way of life.
