Maroon Museum

About this tour

By boat (traditional wooden canoe), you’ll travel to Pikin Slee, one of the largest Maroon villages in the interior of Suriname.

The boat ride takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes and leads you past untouched jungle, small villages, and traditional huts. Along the way, your guide will share fascinating stories about the Maroon community and their unique way of life.

Upon arrival in Pikin Slee, you’ll walk to the Maroon Museum, which was established to preserve and share the culture and history of the Maroons with visitors. The museum is located in the heart of the village and consists of traditional wooden structures, surrounded by a serene and natural environment.

During the guided museum tour, you’ll discover:

  • The history of the Maroons, from the era of slavery to their escape and settlement in the interior

  • Traditional tools and household items, such as fishing nets, paddles, farming tools, and cooking utensils

  • Maroon art and wood carvings, including beautifully decorated wooden doors and masks

  • Spiritual and religious practices, including their rituals and connection to nature

  • The role of women in the community, from household tasks to medicinal knowledge and traditional crafts

After the museum visit, the guide will take you on a village walk through Pikin Slee, giving you a unique glimpse into the daily life of the Maroons. You’ll see how people build their homes, how children play, and how communal life plays a central role in their society.

During the walk, you’ll learn about:

  • The traditional architectural style of Maroon houses

  • How the community relies on the river and jungle for survival

  • The Saramaccan language and customs
