About this tour

Yuca Bread Workshop

A Taste of Tradition

Travel by boat to one of the traditional villages near Danpaati River Lodge. Deep in the Surinamese interior, the Saramaccan communities keep their ancestral knowledge alive including the art of making yuca bread, also known locally as cassava bread.

This immersive workshop invites you to learn directly from the locals how this iconic bread is made, from root to crispy round bread. You’ll be welcomed into the heart of village life, where the locals pass down the knowledge of harvesting, peeling, grating, and pressing the bitter cassava root a plant that has fed generations in the Amazon basin.

After the pulp is squeezed and dried, you’ll help bake the yuca bread on a traditional flat pan over an open fire. It’s a hands on experience filled with storytelling, laughter, and cultural connection. And of course, you’ll get to taste the warm, crunchy result of your own work!
